Expert panelists from across campus - David Chestek, Chris Kanich, Szymon Machajewski and Erin Stapleton-Corcoran- participated in a panel discussion on AI applications like ChatGPT and their place in the future of higher education, and at UIC, which was followed by an opportunity for Q&A with those in attendance.

Meet the Panelists! Heading link
David Chestek
David Chestek graduated from Case Western Reserve with a degree in Biomedical Engineering and went on to medical school at Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed residency at Midwestern University in Emergency Medicine where he was chief resident and then completed fellowship in Clinical Informatics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He stayed on as Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago immediately following his fellowship. He is currently core faculty for the Clinical Informatics fellowship and Chief Medical Information Officer for University of Illinois Health and Hospital Systems. His interests include data visualization, interoperability, continuous remote patient monitoring and improving health system operational efficiency among others.
Chris Kanich
Chris Kanich joined the Computer Science department as faculty in 2012 and is currently an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies. His research focuses on sociotechnical cybersecurity as well as algorithmic fairness and has received over $5.5 million of government and private support. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREER award along with several research, teaching, and advising awards here at UIC. He has also served as a commissioner for the Chicago Advisory Redistricting Commission and is an active science communicator on YouTube and TikTok.
Szymon Machajewski
Szymon Machajewski is the Associate Director of Learning Technologies & Instructional Innovation at Technology Solutions. He specializes in the adoption of technology in teaching and learning, as well as student engagement through learning analytics. Drawing on his 20-year long college teaching experience, his focus is on student success. He is certified in the Mental Health First Aid program and was recognized with a national award for Optimizing Student Experience and a U.S. software patent in e-learning. He serves on the EDUCAUSE Student Success Analytics Steering Committee and UIC Electronic Information Technology (EIT) Accessibility Policy Committee. He was invited as a fellow to the Anthology Center for Advancing Learning, which mission is to provide dynamic, data-informed experiences to the global education community. In 2022, Szymon was a recipient of UIC’s Award of Merit.
Erin Stapleton-Corcoran
Erin Stapleton-Corcoran is an Instructional Designer at UIC’s Instructional Design and Media Production Studio. Prior to joining UIC, she worked as an editor, curriculum designer, instructional designer, and university-level music instructor. She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in music and is pursuing a doctorate in Learning Design and Leadership at UIUC.
